We had a discussion today at lunch about whether Eris should be considered a good or bad little goddess. We were referring to, of course, her reputation for being a little troublemaker.
My personal thought is that Eris is not "good", but absolutely neccessary. Without a good dose of chaos, the world stagnates. It facilitates growth, its an essential part of the cycle of things.
Eris helps us adapt.

Re: Eris - bad/good/neither?
Tue, October 21, 2003 - 8:38 PMI don't tend to view the world in such polar terms (good & bad/evil, black & white, etc.), as to me such terms are necessarily subjective...so I'm not inclined to give her such a label. She just is, and is chaotic. If anything, I'd say she's pretty neutral. Much like myself, she just seems to like throwing the seed of chaos in there and watching the results...which are typically only as bad or good as the receiving parties. Anyway, that's my $.02.

Wed, October 22, 2003 - 6:42 PMthe problem with saying that eris is not 'good' is that she will find you and eat you.

Fri, October 24, 2003 - 12:42 AMI love Eris. She is everything I've ever wanted in anything. She makes the mundane world spectacular. Eris is good. Although she would never admit it. -

Re: Eris - bad/good/neither?
Tue, November 4, 2003 - 8:35 AMI completely agree with hagbard. Eris is just chaos nothing more nothing less, therefore not good not bad. There is no law. All Hail Eris! All Hail Discordia!

Thu, November 6, 2003 - 6:22 PMWhen I was a teenager, I used to masturbate to a photo of Eris every night. Therefore, she must be bad.

Re: Eris - bad/good/neither?
Sun, November 9, 2003 - 4:54 PMEh, good or bad is rather subjective. The question is, has anyone reached the point where Eris in action has become either 'hardly all that surprizing' or 'kinda entertainin'? -

Re: Eris - bad/good/neither?
Sun, November 9, 2003 - 5:13 PMIMHO, Eris in action has become rather like a bunch of frogs in heat.

Re: Eris - bad/good/neither?
Tue, November 11, 2003 - 8:15 PMI didn't think she'd appreciate this speculation, but I consulted my pineal gland anyway.
"Are you good or bad?" I prayed, and she answered "Yes." -

Re: Eris - bad/good/neither?
Fri, May 7, 2004 - 12:05 AMI would have to agree with several people on this thread that Eris just is....very fun to watch and very interesting to deal with.
I have a hard time with labels on God/dess energies because good/bad is so hard to prove and even harder to explain.
If you as different people, they would not be able to list me as good or bad, so why should I limit the Gods in that way.

Re: Eris - bad/good/neither?
Fri, May 7, 2004 - 11:12 PMI remember when I was a kid my sister had a dog, sometimes she'd scold it and call it a bad dog, sometimes she'd praise it and she'd call it a good dog.
To play a prank on her I used to call her dog regularly a Good-bad dog and a Bad-good dog. I'd praise her in a soothing voice and call her a bad dog, and pet her, and do the same when calling her a good dog and pet her.
It was so satisfying to see the dog's tail wagging when she'd be scolding it and calling it a bad dog.
I think we have a goodbad Eris when she's not being badgood, if that only makes perfect sense to me ...it is fine. -

Re: Eris - bad/good/neither?
Sat, May 8, 2004 - 6:00 PMBack in my Dungeons and Dragons days, characters had an "alignment." They were evil or good, and also lawful or chaotic. The traditional Xtian idea of Satan would be Lawful Evil, for example, because he's obviously evil but commands a rigidly defined hierarchy of lesser devils and demons, and follows rules laid down by his adversary. Cthulhu, on the other hand, would be Chaotic Evil, as his motives and agenda (if any) are so foreign to us that we couldn't understand them in any meaningful way even if they were revealed to us.
Eris, on the other hand, would be Chaotic Neutral. She embodies chaos, the opposite of structure and authoritarianism, but is neither good nor evil. She's an instigator, whether the result is "good" or "bad" is immaterial. -

Re: Eris - bad/good/neither?
Sat, May 8, 2004 - 11:41 PMActually the odd thing is she doesn't just encompass both good and evil, by her neutrality to it.
The Sacred Chao demonstrates also that she embodies not only everything eristic but everything aneristic. Reason being, in order clung too the potential for deeper chaos becames more intense, and in chaos deeper orders form.
SO that being said, she might actually be "True Neutral" if you were to be totally accurate within the D&D theme
